अस्सी घाट के बारे में
Assi Ghat is one of the most famous and vibrant ghats in Varanasi, located at the confluence of the Assi River and the Ganga. Steeped in mythology, it is believed that Goddess Durga, after slaying the demon Shumbha-Nishumbha, threw her sword into the Assi River, giving the ghat its name. This sacred site is mentioned in ancient scriptures such as the Puranas and holds immense spiritual value for pilgrims and saints.
The ghat is especially renowned for its Subah-e-Banaras (Morning of Banaras) program, which takes place at sunrise. The ceremony begins with a soulful rendition of Vedic hymns, classical music, yoga sessions, and the offering of prayers to the rising sun and the holy river. In the evening, a Ganga Aarti similar to Dashashwamedh Ghat is performed here, though in a more peaceful setting, making it a favorite among those seeking a less crowded experience.
Apart from its religious significance, Assi Ghat is also a cultural hub. It attracts scholars, students, and travelers from around the world due to its proximity to Banaras Hindu University (BHU). The ghat is lined with cafés, ashrams, and guesthouses, blending spirituality with the everyday rhythm of local life. It is a place where one can witness the true essence of Varanasi—meditation at dawn, rituals throughout the day, and a lively atmosphere by night.
For devotees, taking a dip at Assi Ghat before offering prayers to Lord Shiva in the nearby Shivlinga under a Peepal tree is considered highly auspicious. This blend of mythology, spirituality, and cultural vibrancy makes Assi Ghat a must-visit for anyone exploring the ghats of Kashi.
