नंदीश्वर घाट के बारे में
To the unhurried traveler, Nandishwar Ghat might seem like just another name carved into the long stone rhythm of the riverfront. But this ghat has something special about it.
Named after Nandi, the divine bull and eternal companion of Lord Shiva, this ghat is said to carry the presence of Nandishwar Mahadev — the form of Shiva as seen and served by his most faithful vahana. In some traditions, it is believed that Nandi himself meditated here, facing the river as if guarding the city in silence.
What makes this ghat special is that it is a favourite location for those shooting films & documentaries at Varanasi. Until now, more than 50 films and short films have been shot here. Some notable films & short films include Raanjhanaa, Mukti Bhawan, and Masaan. A part of the ghat was made renovated in 1940 by Dwarkanath Chakraborty, a businessman from Bhowanipur, Bengal. He also built a grand haveli on the ghat which has also served several films, documentaries, and short movies.
This ghat also has a small place of practice which goes by the name ‘Nandeshwar Vyayam Shala.’ Presently around 20 students practice martial arts here in the morning and late evenings. A small shrine sits tucked near the steps, often unnoticed. Locals whisper prayers not just for strength, but for steadfastness — the kind Nandi is known for.
