श्री काल भैरव मंदिर के बारे में
The Kaal Bhairav Temple in Varanasi is one of the city’s most ancient and revered shrines, dedicated to Kaal Bhairav, a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Known as the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi, Kaal Bhairav is believed to be the protector of the city. Tradition says that no one can reside in or enter Varanasi without his permission, and devotees often seek his blessings before beginning their spiritual journey in Kashi.
The temple has a long and rich history, mentioned in ancient scriptures such as the Skanda Purana. The presiding deity is represented not by a full idol but by a silver-faced image of Kaal Bhairav, adorned with a garland of skulls. The deity is depicted holding a trident, symbolizing his role as both protector and punisher. The atmosphere inside the temple is intense with devotion, chants, and the ringing of bells.
Devotees believe that worshipping Kaal Bhairav removes fears, grants protection, and liberates one from negative energies. The sacred thread (Bhairav Raksha Sutra), available in the temple, is tied around the wrist by devotees for safety and blessings. Tuesdays and Sundays are considered especially auspicious, with large crowds offering prayers, oil, black sesame, and flowers.
Beyond its religious significance, the Kaal Bhairav Temple reflects the deeper philosophy of Kashi, where creation and destruction, compassion and discipline coexist. It is not only a powerful center of Shiva worship but also a reminder of the city’s ancient spiritual traditions.
Situated in the heart of the old city, the temple is a must-visit for pilgrims who wish to experience the mystical and protective aspect of Kashi.
